A professional Business Requirements Document template for business analysts and consultants. It guides you from the business problem and measurable objectives through scope, stakeholders, current and future state, to well-formed functional, reporting, data and integration requirements with MoSCoW priority and acceptance criteria. Separate sections cover non-functional requirements, business rules, assumptions, risks, impact assessment, benefits, transition needs and traceability. Writing guidance, an illustrative example requirement and a pre-approval quality checklist help you produce a BRD that business owners actually read and sign. Suitable for ERP, CRM and process change projects.

How to use it

  1. Agree the problem statement, objectives and scope with the business owner before writing detailed requirements.
  2. Run discovery workshops and interviews, then summarize current state and pain points with evidence.
  3. Write requirements one per row with a unique ID, priority, source and testable acceptance criteria.
  4. Add non-functional requirements and business rules with IT, finance and compliance reviewers.
  5. Fill in traceability so each requirement links to an objective and later to design and test.
  6. Run the quality checklist, then walk the business owner through the document before formal approval.
  7. Place the approved version under change control and record every later change in the revision history.
