A structured functional design document for Dynamics 365 Finance, Supply Chain Management and Commerce projects. It walks you from document control and approvals through business context, process catalog reference, requirements covered, alternatives considered and the future-state process with numbered business rules. Detailed sections cover configuration, user interface changes, business logic, reports, integrations, data, security, workflow, batch jobs and error handling, followed by non-functional requirements, risks, test scenarios and training impact. Italic guidance explains what good looks like in each section, and a review checklist helps design authorities approve with confidence.

How to use it

  1. Write one FDD per gap or per small group of closely related gaps, and give it an ID that matches your requirements traceability matrix.
  2. Complete Business Context first: process reference (L1 to L4), requirements covered and current-state pain points.
  3. Document the standard options you considered before proposing an extension, and record why the chosen option won.
  4. Number every business rule and give an example for each, so developers and testers can reference them precisely.
  5. Complete every subsection of Detailed Functional Design or mark it Not applicable, so reviewers can see you considered it.
  6. Hold a design review with the business owner, solution architect and technical lead, using the checklist in Appendix B.
  7. Record approvals and place the document under change control. Hand it to the technical team as the input for the technical design document.
