ERP Effort Estimation Model

Estimate ERP build, design and test effort per object using a complexity matrix, phase factors and confidence-based contingency, rolled up by workstream.

Free

Free Excel workbook. Estimate ERP build, design and test effort per object using a complexity matrix, phase factors and confidence-based contingency, rolled up by workstream. Download it, add your project details and use it today: no sign-up for software, no paywall.

A bottom-up estimation workbook for ERP implementations such as Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations. List every report, interface, data migration entity, extension and form, choose a complexity level, and the model looks up build hours from a calibratable parameter matrix. Design, testing and support effort are added as phase percentages, contingency follows your confidence level, and project management overhead is applied in the Summary. Totals roll up by workstream and object type so you can defend a proposal or a change request. Ideal for solution architects, presales consultants and project managers.

What's inside

  • Estimate: One row per development or configuration object. Hours calculate from Effort Parameters and Phase Factors.
  • Effort Parameters: Build hours per unit by object type and complexity (illustrative starting values - calibrate with your own team's history).
  • Phase Factors: Effort for design, testing and management as a percentage of build hours. Rows 5-9 feed the Estimate sheet - keep them in this order.
  • Summary: key numbers calculated automatically from your data
  • Drop-down lists, worked example rows and formulas you can rely on

How to use it

  1. Start on Effort Parameters. The hours are illustrative starting values only - replace them with your own team's historical actuals before using the estimate commercially.
  2. Add the remaining object types (Workflow, Configuration, Security role, Print document) as rows under the example types, with hours for each complexity level. Any type missing from this table shows 'Add type' on the Estimate sheet.
  3. Review Phase Factors. Rows 5-8 feed design and test hours and row 9 feeds project management overhead, so keep that order.
  4. On the Estimate sheet, add one row per object from your fit-gap or requirements list and link the reference ID.
  5. Choose workstream, object type, complexity, quantity and estimate confidence. Hours, contingency and totals calculate automatically.
  6. Check the Summary for totals by workstream and object type, and for rows with missing rates or low confidence.
  7. Re-estimate low-confidence items after design workshops and record the change against the original baseline.
