Turn development conversations into a plan you can actually track. The Development Goals sheet captures up to a handful of focused goals with competency area, current and target level, success measure, dates, status and days left. The Action Plan applies the 70-20-10 learning model, balancing on-the-job experience, exposure through mentoring and feedback, and formal education, with planned and actual hours and evidence. The Check-ins sheet records regular manager conversations, and the Summary shows progress at a glance. Useful for managers coaching their teams, consultants growing into leadership roles, and anyone preparing for a promotion or career move.
What's inside
- Development Goals: Three to five focused goals. Days left counts down to the target date until the goal is complete.
- Action Plan: Concrete actions per goal using the 70-20-10 model: experience, exposure, education.
- Check-ins: Record each development conversation with your manager or mentor.
- Summary: key numbers calculated automatically from your data
- Drop-down lists, worked example rows and formulas you can rely on
How to use it
- Start with direction, not activities: write down where you want to be in 12 to 24 months, and the two or three capabilities that would get you there.
- Add no more than three to five goals on the Development Goals sheet. Make each one specific and measurable, with a clear success measure and target date.
- Rate your current and target level honestly, ideally with input from your manager or a peer.
- On the Action Plan sheet, list concrete actions for each goal. Aim for a mix: mostly stretch work and real assignments, some mentoring and feedback, and some formal learning.
- Agree the plan with your manager, including what support, time or exposure they will provide.
- Hold a short check-in every four to six weeks and log it on the Check-ins sheet. Update status and progress after each one.
- At the end of the cycle, record evidence of results (projects delivered, feedback, certifications) and set the next round of goals.
Who it's for
