Integration defects rarely come from the transport layer. They come from a field that was 120 characters at the source and 100 at the target, a mandatory value nobody mapped, or a status code translated differently by two teams. This workbook gives functional and technical consultants one place to agree the details. Register each interface with its method, trigger and owners, map every field from source to target data entity or API, maintain value maps with duplicate detection, and let formulas flag truncation risks and missing mandatory fields. Designed for Dynamics 365 finance and operations data entities and OData, and equally usable for any REST API or file integration.
What's inside
- Interface Register: One row per interface. Mapping counts update from the Field Mapping sheet. Examples are illustrative.
- Field Mapping: Source-to-target mapping, one row per target field. Checks flag truncation and unmapped mandatory fields.
- Value Maps: Source-to-target code translations used by 'Value map' rows. Duplicate source values are flagged.
- Summary: key numbers calculated automatically from your data
- Drop-down lists, worked example rows and formulas you can rely on
How to use it
- List every interface on 'Interface Register' with a unique ID (INT-001...), its direction, integration method, trigger, peak volume and both a business and a technical owner.
- On 'Field Mapping', add one row per target field, including fields populated by defaults. Use the exact public field names from the target data entity or API (for example from the OData metadata document or the data entity's field list).
- Record source and target data types and lengths. The Length check column flags any source field longer than its target as a truncation risk.
- Choose a transformation type for every row. For 'Value map', define the source-to-target pairs on the 'Value Maps' sheet using the same map name; duplicates are flagged automatically.
- Fill in a sample source value and the expected target value for each row. These become your unit and SIT test data.
- Review the mapping line by line with the business owner and the developer, then set the status to Approved. Any later change goes back to 'Changed' and is re-reviewed.
- Check the Summary before design sign-off: there should be zero truncation risks and zero mandatory fields left unmapped.
