SIPOC and Process Improvement Worksheet

Map a process with SIPOC, baseline lead time, efficiency and first pass yield per step, then prioritize Lean improvement ideas by impact and effort.

Free

Free Excel workbook. Map a process with SIPOC, baseline lead time, efficiency and first pass yield per step, then prioritize Lean improvement ideas by impact and effort. Download it, add your project details and use it today: no sign-up for software, no paywall.

A Lean Six Sigma style workbook that takes you from scoping to action. Start with a SIPOC to agree process boundaries, suppliers, inputs, outputs, customers and their critical-to-quality requirements. Then baseline each step's touch time, wait time, volume and rework; formulas calculate lead time, process cycle efficiency, first pass yield, rolled throughput yield and monthly labor hours. Finally log improvement ideas against the eight wastes, score them on impact and effort, and see quick wins and major projects in the Summary. Useful for business analysts, process owners and ERP consultants preparing future-state designs.

What's inside

  • SIPOC: High-level map: 4-7 steps from trigger to outcome. Illustrative example: order to cash for a fictional distributor.
  • Process Metrics: Baseline time and quality per step. Use sampled, measured data where possible and record the source.
  • Improvement Ideas: Prioritize ideas by impact and effort. Score = Impact x (6 - Effort).
  • Summary: key numbers calculated automatically from your data
  • Drop-down lists, worked example rows and formulas you can rely on

How to use it

  1. Agree the process start trigger and end outcome with the process owner, then list 4-7 high-level steps on the SIPOC sheet. Write steps as verb plus noun.
  2. Complete Outputs and Customers first, then Inputs and Suppliers. Capture what each customer needs as a measurable requirement (CTQ).
  3. On Process Metrics, record touch time, wait time, monthly volume and rework per step from a measured sample, not from memory. Note the source.
  4. Classify each step as value-add, business value-add or non value-add. Lead time, efficiency, first pass yield and hours calculate automatically.
  5. Run a 5 Whys or fishbone session for the worst steps and log ideas on Improvement Ideas with the waste type.
  6. Score impact and effort with the team. Start with Quick wins, and build a business case for Major projects.
  7. Re-measure after changes and compare with the baseline before marking an idea Verified.
