Agentic ERP Is Here: AI Agents in Dynamics 365 Supply Chain
Purchasing teams can spend half their day chasing suppliers. AI agents in Dynamics 365 now do much of that work. Here’s the data, a real example and how to start.

Agentic AI adoption in supply chain software chart
For years, “AI in ERP” meant dashboards and forecasts: the system suggested, and a person did the work. Agentic AI changes that. An agent can read a supplier’s email, compare it with the purchase order, update the dates and flag what needs a human decision.
This is moving fast. Gartner forecast in April 2026 that by 2030, 60% of enterprises using supply chain management software will have adopted agentic AI features, up from 5% in 2025. Spending on SCM software with agentic AI is expected to grow from less than $2 billion in 2025 to $53 billion by 2030.
Why procurement is the first place agents land
Microsoft says purchasing staff can spend up to 50% of their day managing supplier communications: chasing confirmations, reading delivery date changes and updating purchase orders by hand. It’s repetitive, high-volume and rule-based, which is exactly where agents work best.
Microsoft’s Procurement Agent in Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management, which now includes the earlier Supplier Communications Agent, is in production-ready preview. According to Microsoft Learn, it can:
- Follow up on purchase orders that are unconfirmed or late
- Read supplier emails and PDF attachments for changes to quantity, price, dates or cancellations
- Propose updates to the purchase order for a buyer to review
It doesn’t yet handle every scenario (split deliveries and vendor or site changes, for example), and it runs on Copilot Studio credits. Check the current capabilities before planning a rollout.
Case study: Farmlands Cooperative
Farmlands, a farmer-owned rural supply cooperative in New Zealand, consolidated seven ERP systems onto Dynamics 365. With one platform in place, it deployed the Procurement Agent in Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management to manage vendor communications.
According to Microsoft’s Dynamics 365 blog, the agent now automates half of Farmlands’ purchase order email traffic and is expected to save the team about 20 hours a week.
The order matters. Farmlands didn’t start with agents. It started by getting seven ERPs down to one. An agent can only act on data it can trust.
What changes for supply chain teams
Gartner surveyed 509 supply chain leaders in February 2026:
- 86% say agentic AI will require new processes
- 55% expect it to reduce the need to hire for entry-level positions
- 51% expect overall workforce reductions
The practical change is that buyers move from doing the follow-up to supervising it: reviewing what the agent proposes, handling exceptions and spending more time on supplier relationships and negotiation.
Five steps to your first supply chain agent
1. Start with one high-volume task. PO confirmations and delivery date updates are the classic first use case.
2. Clean the data first. Agents need accurate vendor contacts, item numbers and confirmed dates.
3. Keep a human in the loop. Let the agent propose and the buyer approve until accuracy is proven.
4. Design security for the agent. Agents act with the permissions of the identity they run under, so give them a role designed for the task.
5. Measure hours saved and exceptions caught. Farmlands’ “20 hours a week” is the kind of number that funds the next agent.
FAQ
What is agentic ERP? It’s ERP where AI agents don’t just give insights but carry out tasks, such as reading supplier emails and updating purchase orders, with people supervising and handling exceptions.
What is the Dynamics 365 Procurement Agent? It’s a Microsoft AI agent in Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management, in production-ready preview, that follows up on purchase orders and processes supplier responses. It includes the capabilities of the earlier Supplier Communications Agent.
The takeaway
Agentic ERP isn’t a 2030 idea. It’s in production today for purchase order follow-up. Start with one repetitive task, keep people in control, and measure the hours you give back.
